The Handmaid's Tale

 I just finished watching the first episode of The Handmaid's Tale, and I'm emotionally beaten to a pulp. You think Insidious is scary? Or The Exorcist? This show is pure horror! Terror! Creeping dread! It's very well done, and it's been decades since I read the book, so I'm not comparing them as such. It's the proximity to real life that makes it so unsettling. Brrr.

If the US ever becomes a true theocracy (which doesn't sound so crazy these days, does it), I will smuggle all of you into Canada and keep you hidden in my basement. It's nice, and has a kitchenette, so. xoxoxox

The Handmaid's Tale is terrifying. I was of two minds about watching it - not sure if I wanted to put myself through that. Emotional pulp sounds about right.

I have the first three eps, but have decided til the whole season is out before I watch. I re-read the book a few months ago and am not prepared for any cliffhangering. I like my dystopian near-future nightmares to be uninterrupted ha.

I don't have Hulu, so I haven't watched the show, but I tried recently to reread the book (which I also first read decades ago!), and found it so unsettling and disturbing that I couldn't get through it. Reality is just a wee bit too close to fiction for comfort, these days.

I haven't seen the show yet at all, but I first read the book when I was a teenager, and in fact I very distinctly remember that (reading the book) as the moment when I came to the frightening realization that progress wasn't automatic, and that women's rights were something we could lose.
